cairns family activities & tours: tjapukai aboriginal cultural park

Tropical North Queensland is home to many Indigenous people and tribes. You can experience their culture first hand by taking a tour to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. Located at the foot of the Barron Gorge National Park which is located in the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics area. These enthusiastic people have been rehearsing for 40,000 years to showcase their culture to you. Tjapukai is dedicated to preserving and presenting authentic Aboriginal culture with the aid of the most modern technology.

Have you ever wondered how it all began? Come and marvel at the Tjapukai art. Try boomerang, spear throwing or didgeridoo playing. Witness the traditional song and dance on a hand crafted stage. Listen in at the history theatre. Become familiar with their natural bush remedies and see an Aboriginal camp which gives you a meaningful glimpse of a rich and ancient culture. The Aboriginal story is told in Tjapukai language and is heard through headsets translated into eight languages — a story of how the modern world descended upon a 40,000 year old culture. The Tjapukai and Yirrganydjii communities and their elders have approved and overseen the materials presented in the park. They own the land the park is situated on and have a substantial equity interest in the venture.

Stay and have a big buffet lunch in the Boomerang Café, renowned as the best buffet around. The day show runs for approximately 3 hours and will leave you mesmerized. The dancers are internationally recognized. They represented Australia in the ‘Gday LA’ in America not long ago.

Did you know Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park was the first Aboriginal Cultural attraction in Australia? And have you ever wondered if Boomerangs really do come back?
