Rainforest Habitat

“Australia’s leading environmental wildlife experience”

Breakfast with the Birds — Lunch with the Lorikeets

Would you like to meet a new friend? The Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas is the perfect place to go!

The Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary is a leader in its field of wildlife immersion exhibits. Situated on eight acres of land allowing visitors to wander through and discover over 180 species (1 600 animals) in three unique environments; Rainforest, Wetlands and Grasslands.

Boardwalks intertwine through the canopy and rainforest floor of these environments, providing an exhilarating and educational journey for all. Get close to these wonderful and exotic animals, parrots, cockatoos, tawny frogmouths, laughing kookaburras, cute koalas, slimy pythons and killer crocodiles. You can even cuddle a nice kangaroo.

As soon as you get into the park, look for Cathy, the Southern cassowary: She is classed as endangered and is found only in the Wet Tropics area of Tropical North Queensland. Learn about these birds, they are a “keystone” species. This means that the loss of this wonderful bird could eventually lead to the loss of plant species and long term changes in vital plant communities so be careful when you are exploring our region and look out for the signs which say “Slow Down Cassowary Crossing”.

For the ultimate, the original “Lunch with the Lorikeets” is a visitor must do. Guests are immersed within the Wetlands environment whilst enjoying the cacophony of sounds and colours of wildlife as the birds wander freely amongst the guests. Under tables, flying overhead, resting on your table, they are inquisitive little colorful creatures.

Meet Elvis, the black cockatoo, he is always curious about meeting people and he knows that the best location in the park is next to the Curlew Café & Bar.

Greeted by a dedicated staff, you will be treated to enjoy a sumptious buffet including: soup, a selection of steak, fish, pasta, salads, cheeses, tropical fruits, tea and coffee. The only thing you would have to be careful is watch that none of your “new friends” would steal what is on your plate when you go for a refill…!

Enhance your experience with a free guided tour of the park where experienced guides introduce visitors to the special relationship that the wildlife shares with the Wet Tropics region.

Have your photograph taken with a cute koala knowing all proceeds go to the Habitats Animal Rescue fund. Crocodile, python and   exotic bird photographs are now also available.

Great place for your next work function, or even a birdlovers' wedding. These can all be taken care of on site. Imagine going back to Europe or the Americas and telling your friends you got married in the Rainforest with all of your friends (1,600 exotic animals). Wow! Can you imagine the photographs!!

And if you would like to take home a souvenir to show off to your friends and family then the gift shop at the entrance provides a vast range of quality Australian and locally made products including many reference books on birds, animals and the ancient rainforest. Toys for the kids to learn from, souvenirs, clothing and educational products.
