Cairns Tropical Zoo
Cairns Tropical Zoo is the largest and the most diverse wildlife attraction in the Far North, set on six hectares of tropically landscaped gardens, and is home to hundreds of exotic species many of which are indigenous to Tropical North Queensland.
Throughout the day you have many opportunities to get up close and personal and make a few friends along the way.
As you enter the park Max the blue and gold Macaw will greet you.
With a morning and afternoon presentation with professional wild life keepers you can learn more about Australia’s extraordinary wildlife.
Enjoy the snake show that hosts the most toxic terrestrial snake, the inland taipan which can kill 250,000 lab mice or 60 adults in one teaspoon of venom, learn vital first aid and get to pat the Blackheaded python.
See Queensland’s first free flight bird show which gives you the opportunity of close encounters with many bird species including the majestic Sea Eagles. Look out for the barn owl Dawn and the cheeky cockatoo Rumpole that thinks he is a kangaroo.
The zoo is home to alligators, freshwater crocodiles and the fearsome estuarine crocodile. Sarge, one of the most famous crocs, was caught up in Bamaga after he took one of the local policeman’s dogs. He had to spend the night in the watchhouse because it was the only place his enormous 5.2 meter frame would fit. See the experienced keepers hand feed these living dinosaurs in a spectacular Crocodile Show.
The park boasts 40 tame Eastern Grey kangaroos that you can hand feed in the walk–through enclosure and has the best reptile exhibit in Queensland.
Meet Marley and Rahrah part of the exotic and endangered species of Red Panda. These Red Pandas from the Himalayas are part of an international breeding program.
Marvel at the different array of birds in the 3 different walk through aviaries. The ‘Birds of Prey’ hosts the Kookaburra, Frogmouth, and Barn Owls, while the other two host a variety of rainforest birds which are predominantly native to the region. The noise is deafening and the colors are amazing as you hand feed the tame lorikeets. And if your lucky, Keety the tamest lorikeet might come and sit on your shoulder.
You can cuddle a Koala or for the more adventurous get wrapped up with a massive Boa Constrictor and have a souvenir photo that you will treasure for years to come.
Also available is a free wombat and crocodile photo opportunity where you can stroke a wombat or have a photograph taken with a baby crocodile.
The large timber deck at the licensed Koala Café is the perfect place to unwind, kick back and enjoy something from the scrumptious menu while watching the many water bird species cruise by on the pond.
The large air–conditioned gift shop has a large selection of Australian and locally made products. Take home a fantastic souvenir to reminisce your animal experience at the zoo.
