Dunk Island
Dunk Island is located 4.5 km off the coast of Mission Beach and is part of the Family Islands. The Family Islands are a group of nine tropical islands that float on the sapphire waters of the Great Barrier Reef. Dunk Island is the largest and most northerly of the Family Islands and is characterised by lush undulating hills, gullies of dense tropical rainforest, and native Australian eucalypt forest. Dunk Island covers 970 ha, and 730 ha of Dunk Island is protected national park which is home to a myriad of tropical flora and fauna. The highest peak of Dunk Island is Mt Kootaloo, which soars 271 m above sea level. Walking tracks, ranging from mild to difficult, wind through Dunk Island’s national park, affording guests the opportunity for a more intimate wilderness experience.
Dunk Island (also known as Coonanglebah by indigenous Aboriginals) has a rich indigenous history and is the traditional sea country of the Bandjin and Djiru Aboriginal people. The Aboriginal people inhabited the area for tens of thousands of years when the region was a large coastal plain. Around 8,000 years ago seal levels rose, the coastal plain was submerged and the large hills are now the Family Group of Islands. In bark canoes Aboriginal people paddled to the islands to collect, hunt and gather the islands vast resources. The indigenous history of the islands is still present with rock art and shell middens providing a unique glimpse into an ancient and mysterious past of long ago.
Dunk Island’s combination of rainforest and eucalypt forest is home to a variety of tropical Australian animals. Dunk Island is a bird watchers paradise and is home to over 100 species of sea and forest bird. The birds range from large ground dwellers such as the Australian Bush Turkey to small vibrant birds such as the Yellow Bellied Sunbird. A walk through the national park may provide guests with a close encounter of the reptilian kind – watch the large harmless pythons and tree snakes baking in the sun. The freshwater creeks on Dunk Island are home to Saw-Shelled Tortoises and a variety of fish including jungle perch, rainbow fish and long finned eels. Getting There
Dunk Island lies on the Great Barrier Reef, 4.5 km off the coast of Mission Beach. Guests can access Dunk Island by commercial flights from Cairns or Townsville, commercial ferries from Clump Point at North Mission Beach (travel time is approximately 40 minutes) or water taxi from Wongaling and South Mission Beach (travel time approximately 10 minutes). Dunk Island is also accessible by private vessels. When making your reservation, ensure you book transfers to Dunk Island at the same time as boats and planes only travel at certain times.
